Through the development of these fantastic motor vehicles, Britain has gained a reputation for brilliant design and beautiful machines but how did it all start, and why is the Rolls Royce such an acclaimed car?It all started over one hundred years ago, during the Victorian era. A Mr. Henry Royce began a mechanical business in 1884, and before long he was creating cars. His first was called the Royce 10, which he manufactured in his Manchester factory. Many people were seriously impressed by the cutting edge design that Henry Royce had created, and he admitted himself that he had many ideas for slightly different designs. Unfortunately, he did not have the starting capital to really invest in his business.
This led to an extraordinary meeting that has gone down in history as the beginning of something truly special. On May 4th, 1904, Henry Royce was introduced to a Mr. Charles Rolls. Charles Rolls owned a car dealership in London, and wanted to expand the business. He had the starting capital as well as the means to sell the cars and Henry Royce had the brains to design them. They began to collaborate, and there have been almost twenty Rolls Royce designs since then.
What makes the Rolls Royce so popular is that it manages to combine two of the most intrinsic and important parts of a car: excellent machinery, and gorgeous design. This is why car engineers and casually observers can love the Rolls Royce equally; because it is so wonderful on so many levels.
