How to have a Fabulous Time in Cheltenham Gold Cup

horse racing

The Cheltenham Gold Cup is considered a Premiere Hunt Chase. It has a distance of more than three miles and two and a half furlongs with twenty-two fences that have to be jumped over by the horses with their riders.

History

Since 1924 the Gold Cup has become the country’s most prestigious hunt event. A few cancellations have been made throughout the years – during foul weather and during World War II. But otherwise, the hunt has been held continuously at Cheltenham. To this day visitors frequent this area and even hire professional chauffeuring service to get around. In July 1819 the first race was won flat out by a horse fondly known as Spectre. Thus, the birth of the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The race was mostly run over jumps until 1924 but soon this was overshadowed by the National Hunt Chase, another festival race.

Cheltenham Festival

Today the Cheltenham Festival is a four-day event which takes place in March every year. A championship race is held each day with the Gold Cup culminating the event on the last day. Not many international contestants join unlike events in Ireland and Britain but this does not make it any less popular among its local community.

Where To Stay

If you happen to be in the vicinity to witness this momentous event you may want to stay in Broadway during the course of the weeklong affair. It has long been a tradition for visitors to make this a favourite stopover due to the number of inns, lodging and the pubs all at a walking distance. Others though prefer a more luxurious treat such as chauffeuring. It has practically all the amenities you need. Aside from that, Broadway still maintains its’ Cotswold limestone buildings that date back in the sixteenth century which makes it more thrilling for the traveling enthusiast.

So you see, there’s so much more to do and experience other than the Cheltenham Gold Cup that you are highly anticipating. During lull periods there are so many interesting places to explore like their caravan site, restaurants, hotels, lodgings that your chauffeuring service can take you. Antique lovers will also have a fabulous time going through their numerous art galleries and antique shops. Once you experience all these, you will definitely come back for more.
