It is always vital, for any bride and groom, to make sure that they do not overlook one important aspect of their wedding which many people do: the transport! You don’t want to be late to the church, or heaven forbid, not make it! Although it is traditional for the groom to organise the wedding transport, brides often take things into their own hands when their menfolk do not get their act together! So what is the history of wedding transport?
Well, hundreds of years ago the bride would always get married in her home church. This usually meant that she would be able to walk to the church, allowing anyone that had not been invited to the wedding to still get a chance to see her all dressed up for her big day. The groom was usually from the same area too, but if he was not then it was likely that he was staying in a nearby hotel or inn, and could also walk to church. However, as weddings became more complicated and more extravagant, simply walking was no longer an option. The horse and carriage ñ or horse and cart, depending on where you were on the social scale ñ was the perfect solution to this problem. The horse and carriage could be decorated with flowers and the wedding colours, and a man would be hired to drive the bride and her father, and then the happy couple, around for the day.
In many ways, not much has changed from that point. Admittedly, fewer people arrive at their weddings in a horse and carriage, but the tradition of being driven by a chauffeur has remained. It is great not to have to concentrate on the road when you are on your wedding day. So if you are planning your wedding, consider hiring a chauffeur for yourself on your big day!
